An involuntary separation is stressful for the employee, the people delivering the news, and for the coworkers affected. Unfortunately, it can often mean more than stress. In addition to the costs of replacing an employee, there are many other direct and indirect costs. And high-profile stories of disgruntled former employees causing harm or violence lend real fears to organizations.

This presentation outlines key steps to prepare for a respectful involuntary separation – before, during and after the conversation. Intended to be practical, we include checklists and helpful tips you can easily adapt to your workplace. With understandable concerns about potential violence, we have a section on reasons to stay connected to former employees and monitor for concerns if necessary.

For those in HR, we offer a security perspective for reducing potential threats in the workplace and HR tools to mitigate risk. For those in security, we offer tips for leveraging your HR partnership as a security force multiplier. As Sean and Melissa have learned from our multidisciplinary partnership, we’re stronger together!
